GN trays for professional catering

In the catering industry, standardized containers and trays are often used, which, among other things, allow better stackability of the containers, so-called GN trays. GN is an abbreviation for"Gastronorm", which indicates the size of containers used in the catering industry. Gastronorm containers are used for buffets, catering and the hygienic storage of food, among other things. In the Banholzer online store, restaurateurs in Switzerland can buy GN trays that are manufactured to the highest quality standards especially for gastronomic use.

What are Gastronorm trays used for?

If a container complies with the GN gastronorm, this ensures that it has been manufactured in accordance with the applicable industry standard. The advantage of these standardized containers is that the containers and inserts can be easily exchanged and transported in GN inserts or container trolleys. The Gastronorm also makes it easier to store, stack and clean the containers.

There are very different areas of application for GN trays. Gastronorm containers are mainly used to keep food warm on the buffet or for food presentation in catering. However, they can also be used for cooling and storing food. GN trays are also frequently used at self-service counters. In the Banholzer online store you will find a selection of Gastronorm trays in various sizes for your individual application.

These are the advantages of GN trays in the catering industry

GN trays are an integral part of every professional kitchen. They offer decisive advantages:

  • Standardized size
GN containers are manufactured to an international standard in a uniform size and shape. This means they fit seamlessly into GN-compatible appliances such as refrigerators and warming units, buffet stations and kitchen ovens. Standardization also facilitates the organization and exchange of containers between different kitchens and businesses.
  • Efficient storage
GN containers can be stacked. This saves space in the kitchen and also makes them easier to store in drawers and on shelves.
  • Tasteful presentation
GN containers are ideal for the attractive presentation of food at buffets, in self-service stores or at catering events.
  • Easier preparation
GN containers can be used directly on the hob or in the oven. They are also suitable for various preparation methods such as roasting, steaming, deep-frying and sous-vide.

What sizes of GN trays are available?

The popular Gastronorm containers are available in a total of nine different sizes, which are measured by the outer dimensions of the containers. In addition, GN trays are also available in various depths in which food of all kinds can be stored or kept warm. The standard size of a 1/1 Gastronorm container is 530 mm x 325 mm. All other sizes refer to this dimension. A Gastronorm 2/1 container is therefore twice as long at 650 × 350 mm.

These are the most common sizes of GN trays:

  • 1⁄2 Gastronorm: 325 mm × 265 mm
  • 1⁄3 Gastronorm: 325 mm × 176 mm
  • 1⁄4 Gastronorm: 265 mm × 162 mm
  • 1⁄6 Gastronorm: 176 mm × 162 mm
  • 1⁄9 Gastronorm: 108 mm × 176 mm

You can buy Gastronorm containers made of metal or plastic

You can buy a GN tray for the catering industry in various materials. The most common materials are stainless steel or plastic, especially polycarbonate. GN trays made of CNS stainless steel are particularly robust, durable, corrosion-resistant and hygienic. Stainless steel trays are also resistant to high temperatures, chemical cleaning agents and mechanical stress. This means they can also be placed in the oven or bain-marie counter without any problems. Stainless steel GN containers are dishwasher-safe and therefore easy to clean in industrial dishwashers.

One advantage of plastic GN trays is that they are very light and are often purchased as a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel containers. The plastic bowls are also transparent, so you can see the contents at a glance without having to remove the bowl and open the lid. Most plastic GN bowls are dishwasher-safe, but must not be exposed to high temperatures, as otherwise they will deform easily.

Cast aluminum GN containers for induction stoves

Many catering establishments cook with induction. This is why you will find GN pans in the Banholzer online store that are suitable for use on induction stoves. Our Gastronorm containers made of cast aluminum are equipped with a ferromagnetic base that is tuned to the electromagnetic fields of the induction stove and thus generates heat. The result is fast and even heat distribution, which is ideal for even cooking or keeping food warm.

When buying GN bowls, make sure that they are marked as suitable for induction.

Buy GN trays with lids from Banholzer

In our store you will find a selection of high-quality GN trays from well-known manufacturers that are especially suitable for use in professional kitchens. In addition to the standardized containers, you can also buy matching Gastronorm lids. We offer both bowls with lids and individually available GN lids as push-fit lids or flat lids.
