Spoons - history, designs & care

The spoon is one of the oldest types of cutlery in the history of mankind. Its shapely character and ergonomic design have meant that even in the age of modern man, it is a must on every table. It forms the basis of high-quality cutlery across cultures and countries. A warming soup or a delicious dessert without a spoon? No - it is part of the table setting and is therefore a standard item in every kitchen and restaurant.

There are many different uses for spoons in day-to-day catering operations. When the sugar trickles into the espresso, the dessert is brought to the mouth or the soup is to be enjoyed, a spoon is needed - and not just any spoon. A spoon should meet different criteria for all foods and drinks. After all, a soup spoon does not fit into an espresso cup. We have every type of spoon you need for your delicacies.

It is not just the number of spoon types that is remarkable. There are also some interesting things to discover about the history of spoons. You are also sure to be interested in the best way to care for your spoons during daily use. You can find out everything you need to know about spoons here.

What different types of spoons are there?

Among the 30 or so types of spoon, there are some models that are more popular than others and are needed more frequently. Small spoons are particularly necessary for small containers such as a coffee or espresso cup. For a soup or stew, on the other hand, a large spoon should be used. Each spoon has a different surface area, also known as a spoon bowl, and can therefore be used for different purposes. The length of the handle is also decisive for the intended use. We offer the following types of spoons:

These classic spoons are perfect for setting your tables. If you are looking for special spoons for arranging or serving food, take a look at our bar accessories and serving cutlery. Serve your food in style with bar spoons, ladles and more.

The history of the spoon

Alongside the knife, the spoon is one of the oldest types of cutlery. Tradition shows that it was already in use before the year 1600. At that time it was made of wood. Today, the most common material for spoons is metal. This offers a number of advantages:

  • Metal is tasteless. No matter what food you want to serve - the metal spoons in our range do not give off any taste of their own, so all the flavors can develop freely.
  • Metal spoons are robust. They retain their attractive appearance for a long time and are suitable for everyday use and cleaning in the dishwasher.
  • Metal offers many possibilities in terms of design and shape. Long handles, small bowls - everything to suit your taste.
  • Metal is particularly hygienic. Unlike wood, it offers no surface for germs and food residues to attack. The sealed surface prevents germs from penetrating. Discoloration is also not possible with normal use and care. These spoons are therefore not only suitable for traditional catering, but also for use in the healthcare sector.
  • Unlike plastic, metal offers food resistance - even with hot food and drinks.

The structure of the spoon

The spoon structure is divided into two parts. The handle of the spoon is located in the lower section. This can be round or square and is used to hold the cutlery. Depending on the intended use, the handle is long or short. For drinks such as lemonade or a latte macchiato, you can find special spoons with a very long handle in our store. This is ideal for stirring drinks in tall glasses. Spoons with a long handle can also be practical for eating large sundaes.

The lip is located above the stem. This cavity, also known as a spoon in technical jargon, is used to hold food and drinks. The size of the spoon determines its intended use. On the one hand, it must fit the selected container and, on the other, the food and drink.

Design and shapes

If you would like to buy a dinner spoon and add any type of elegant spoon to your existing cutlery, the shape and design are important. After all, everything should be compatible with each other and create a harmonious picture on the table. When adding suitable spoons to your cutlery, the first thing to look for is the same material. Our spoons are made of CNS or steel, for example. These two materials meet the highest quality standards and make your new cutlery particularly durable - it will remain beautiful for a long time, even in everyday restaurant use. To ensure that your table setting makes a good impression on customers and invites them to dine together, the surface of your new spoons should also match the rest of your cutlery. Here you have the choice between matt and polished. The design of the handle also varies: While the spoons from the Atlantic series, for example, impress with a smooth, straight handle design, the models from the Miracle series have a textured handle surface. Which design do you prefer?

The right care for spoons - preserving their elegant appearance for a long time

Whether it's a teaspoon, coffee spoon or espresso spoon, they all need the right care. Coffee spoons and other metal models require hardly any maintenance. Only the shine can be increased. Various household products and the use of special and gentle washing-up liquids are very effective here. Polishing after washing also ensures that the spoons shine elegantly on the table.
