Even at the end of the 19th century, the cocktail shaker was an integral part of the professional kitchen. Back then, the individual ingredients were still mixed in a cup. However, when ice was added as an important component, the first shaker cocktail was prepared in a sealed cup. Spirits, ice cubes, fruit juices: the drink only gets its special finish when it is prepared in a cocktail shaker and would never taste as it should without this form of preparation. This is why the cocktail shaker has become an integral part of every well-stocked bar.
The shaker is the epitome of bar culture. Or to put it another way: it wouldn't be a proper cocktail bar without a cocktail shaker. Bartenders use it to mix selected ingredients and chill them at the same time by adding ice.
There are many different ways to prepare cocktails. In most cases, all the ingredients are added to the mixing glass at once, ice cubes are added and the bartender shakes the ingredients vigorously for around 12 to 15 seconds with the lid closed. Some cocktail recipes also specify that individual ingredients are added gradually. After shaking, the shaker is opened again, the excess ice is strained off and the cocktail is poured through a sieve into the glass. Shaking ensures that the flavors are exchanged during preparation. In addition, some cocktails are also intended to create a foam.
These drinks are usually prepared in a shaker:
Classic cocktail shakers are available in two versions. The cocktail shaker set consists of either two or three parts. Which shaker variant you choose for your bar depends on your personal preferences and also your experience and skill in mixing cocktails. In the Banholzer online store, you can buy both the American version, the Boston shaker, and the French or Parisian shaker.
This shaker consists of two main components: a metal cup and a mixing glass. It is particularly popular with bar professionals and experienced bartenders because it requires some experience and dexterity to use. To prepare the drink, all the ingredients are poured into the glass and then the mug is placed on top. A small tap with the back of the hand fixes the glass and cup together and the glass closes flush. This means that nothing can go wrong when shaking.
The drink is then shaken with both hands. The bartender then puts the metal shaker down on the metal side, loosens the glass and pours the drink into a new glass using a special strainer. By the way, professionals only strain the liquid through a small gap that they create between the cup and the glass.
The French shaker is the European version of the cocktail shaker and makes the bartender's work easier thanks to its special design. It is a three-part cocktail shaker set consisting of a mixing cup, an attachment and a small cap. The attachment also acts as a bar strainer. The advantage of this version is that the bartender can pour the ingredients through the integrated strainer into the glass immediately after mixing. This saves one work step and makes preparation easier, especially when many thirsty guests are waiting for their order.
The cocktail shaker naturally fulfills important tasks in the preparation of cocktails, but is also a decorative element of the bar equipment. You should therefore always buy a bar shaker that integrates well visually into your bar and creates a high-quality impression when shaking.
